WomanSong's new Christmas CD includes some of the most beautiful music ever written for women's choirs with the best arrangements of holiday classics such as: Wilhousky's Carol of the Bells, Rutter's Deck the Hall, and Wilcocks' The First Nowell.  Rare treasures on this CD include O frondens virga, a haunting medieval chant written by Hildegard in the 12th century and Salve Regina, a gorgeous contemporary rendition in the style of Renaissance motet.  Other unique selections include J. David Moore's richly conceived vocal arrangement of the Appalachian classic carol I Wonder as I Wander and our own commissioned arrangement of In the Bleak Midwinter by the up and coming composer Mark Templeton.  Other selections include: Silent Night, Here We Come A Wassailing, Sweet Little Jesus Boy, Canticle of Mary, Balulalow from A CEREMONY OF CAROLS.   Produced by Founder Artistic Director Joann Cordell

And we do mean Eclectic! This concert to raise funds for RCCR contained such treasures as Francesa Caccini’s Aure Volanti, a jewel from the early baroque period featuring a ritornello 3 flutes and continuo with women’s voices hinting at the emerging fugue of the period. Other selections on this concert included: Felix Mendelssohn’s gentle Surrexit Pastor Bonus Op. 39 and the Johannes Brahms Vier Lieder aus dem Jungbrunnen representing the Romantic period. The haunting Mountain Nights Movement I by Zoltan Kodaly was the offering from the early 20th century. Folk songs showcased on the concert were: The Turtle Dove, Danny Boy, and Scarborough Fair. American standards included: a bluesy rendition of Over the Rainbow, and Bridge Over Troubled Water.

This Christmas concert lived up to its word as it truly allowed the listener to feel the very presence of the heavenly hosts of Christmas. Some of the selections included: Mathhew Larkin’s gorgeous rendition of the ancient text Adam lay Ybounden, Benjamin Britten’s Balulalow, Patrick Hadley’s ethereal I Sing of a Maiden, J David Moore’s unique arrangement of an Appalachian carol, I Wonder as I Wander. Favorite carols on the program were: Sweet Little Jesus Boy with rich choral foil to the soprano soloist in Michael Neeaum’s powerful arrangement for treble voices. John Rutter’s rousing Deck the Hall and Edward Henderson’s uplifting Huron Carol were favorites on the concert as well.

This very special concert was a collection of songs depicting the many stages and phases of a woman’s life. Several of the songs were introduced with an original poem by Colleen Anderson. Daydreams and reflections were wistfully pondered through J David Moore’s arrangement of Stuart Stott’s Music in My Mother’s House. Jennifer Stasack’s ethereal arrangement of Durham and Brown’s Sky Dances was another favorite. Other songs include Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, the quirky Warning based on the text by Jenny Joseph “When I grow old I will Wear Purple. Another favorite To a Wild Rose. WomanSong a 3 part song cycle commissioned by Joann Cordell and written by Mark Templeton for flute, harp, violin, and cello was the centerpiece of the program.

 
   

 

THE BIG APPLE TO THE BIG EASY has favorite American music from the various styles of Broadway, Can’t Help Lovin that Man; The swing sound of the 40’s,
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy; favorites of Gerswhin, I Got Rhythm, Irving Berlin’s Cheek to Cheek. Other songs on this truly American CD are favorite spirituals and folk songs, Ezekiel Saw the Wheel, Deep River, Shenandoah. Ballads included are The Three Mountain Ballads arranged by Ron Nelson, He’s Gone Away, Will He Remember, and Barbara Allen. There is something for everyone on this musical journey from The Big Apple to the Big Easy!

This concert that showcased music composed specifically for women’s choirs by some of the world’s foremost composers was the focus of this concert as womanSong performed such beloved classics as Randall Thompson’s Alleluia, Edward Grieg’s Solveig’s Song from PEER GYNT, Durufle’s Tota Pulchra es and Mozart’s Laudata Dominum.

   


 

In the mood of a peaceful holiday evening filled with special memories of Candlelight Christmases, womanSong takes the listener to a spiritual place through performances of our favorite Christmas songs including: Gabriel’s Message, Carol of the Bells, and In the Bleak Midwinter.       $16.00 on compact disc  Produced by Founder Artistic Director Joann Cordell

 

 

This concert was a virtual time travel as womanSong took the audience on a musical journey spanning five centuries from the Renaissance Period to the present. The concert highlights the lovely and haunting Brahms VIER GESANGE (FOUR SONGS FOR WOMAN’S VOICES) accompanied by harp and horn. Other selections on the program included;Monteverdi’s Ego Flos Campiand Randall Thompson’s Alleluia Amen from PLACE OF THE BLESSED.

 

 

Appalachian Celtic musicians join womanSong in an evening of exciting Celtic songs commissioned by Joann Cordell for WomanSong and arranged by Mark Templeton. From the fun loving to the serious and sober, the concert included the rousing Birth of St. Patrick, the lamenting Irish Eyes, the jaunty Kerry Dance, the jolly Galway Piper, and the beloved Danny Boy.


 

Weaving the rich musical threads of the ancient folk music of the British Isles, collected and arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams, womanSong Chorale’s performance of FOLK SONGS OF THE FOUR SEASON was the centerpiece for this program. American folk songs included Steal Away and Big River.


 

Visions of glistening snow and the warmth of the holidays came to mind at this concert celebrating Christmas with old favorites such as Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. Other favorites on the program were the haunting and soulful The Snow by English composer Edward Elgar and other wonderful songs popularized by The Kings College Choir of Oxford.

Shortly after the 9/11 tragedy, knowing America yearned for peace and stability, womanSong won a juried audition to perform for 1 hour at the Millenium Stage at The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington DC. The concert was broadcast via internet worldwide!
